wrong place

that was a really cool movie...
but that definitely wasn't made in flash

awesome

That was quite possibly the most amazing display of Flash talent I have ever seen. Out of all the different games that I play, the "2d-space-fighter" has always been my favorite. Throughout my life I must've played so many of these games. Congradulations. Your work is even better than some of the games I have had to go out and spend money on. That's fricken awesome.
I also give you major props because I have tried to make a game like this using Flash. That was the most amazingly hard thing to do. It was only one level, all the code I put into it started making the game run slow, and in the end I tossed it off as crap.
Anyways, I am really glad to see that nothing I put into my weak attempt showed up in your game. Powerups, missles, bombs, all the different enemies, and the bosses were very well done. After all the praise I have given your game, I just have one negative comment. I think it was too easy. For all the games like this, I usually die at least once before reaching the first boss. In this one, the only death I had was on the boss with the knife-looking thing. If you ever decide to make another game like this (which I really hope you do) or add something to this game (which would also be awesome) I would make the enemies shoot faster. When I saw that you started out with 15 lives, I was like holy crap, this is going to be hard. 3 was more than enough.
Man, I am so jealous. I wish I could make stuff this good.

Thank you. Glad you like it. :)

awesome

wow, I am really impressed by your game
Gradius is probably my favorite SNES game and your replica is very good.

I only have two gripes.
The last boss couldn't be killed with the triangle weapon.
It could have been more challenging.
The graphics could have been better, but that would have increased lag, so i respect that compromise.

Out of all the submissions I have ever seen, this is one I feel I relate to the most.
I myself am actually working on a game for school which is very similar to this one.
My inspiration was gradius III
only yours is about 20 times better
Although it is only finished as a school project, I will probably submit it sometime next week. I am hoping to add to it later during my own time.
a review from you would be very appreciated

I also have a couple of questions. I was wondering how you set your movie up on your timeline. When I first started building my game, I realized I couldn't construct it like a regular movie (I couldn't figure out how you could get hit test actionscript on every frame). Instead, the whole game is in three repeating frames, with a lot of movie clips. How did you work out this problem in your game? I'd be very interested in hearing more of the details if you don't mind.

wow...that was the longest review i ever wrote...

Rhete responds:

This isnt really a Gradius replica, Gradius is a lot slower and screws you over for dying in the middle of a stage

Thank you for noticing the triangle gun bug, I had that fixed but it accidentally got undone when I changed the guns a bit and copied their new settings to every stage. I'll upload a fix asap

As for the timeline, it is indeed 2 frames repeating over and over. Each time it repeats, a time keeper variable is incremented by 1, which in turn is used to control when enemies appear, and keep the backgrounds in sync. The only time the movie goes off the main 2 frames is when you die or finish a stage

Thanks for the review, I'll be sure to check out your game when it gets released

No soup for you!
